In 1967, Bill Davis, cofounder of Golf Digest magazine and a member of the Metropolitan Advertising Golf Association in New York City, conceived the idea of an annual golf tournament for teams from advertising golf associations around the country encouraging a closer relationship among these groups. Bill enlisted the support of many of his advertising colleagues in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Detroit and held the first such tournament at the Broadwater Beach Hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi in November of 1968. NAGA was formed at this tournament and its original by-laws were drafted there. NAGA incorporated in North Carolina in 1994.

NAGA currently is composed of 9 member chapters throughout the United States and looks to grow further by the addition of other chapters. A national tournament has been held every year since 1968 at many of the great golf resorts of the United States. Events have been held at Bay Hill (2), Pebble Beach (2), Hilton Head, The Wigwam (2), Pinehurst (3), The Broadmoor (2), The American Club/Blackwolf Run, Doral, Silverado, Kiawah and LaQuinta/PGA West to name a few. Quality personal and business relationships created and enhanced at quality golf resorts is the consistent theme of our annual tournaments. NAGA has flourished because of the warm relationships generated among the various local chapter members who attend year after year, and the fun they share at these annual tournaments. NAGA tournaments are comprised of four divisions playing one round on each of two courses. Each chapter enters a four person team to decide the Team event; "The Haig" is for non-team members from the various chapters who are under the age of 65; "The Grand Masters" for those non-team members over the age of 65; "The Roses" for women spouses of members. While competition is fierce, fun is the over-riding factor stressed in the NAGA tournament. Ample time and opportunity are provided to expand relationships in the advertising industry nationwide and to renew old friendships from past years. Quality golf, lodging, food and camaraderie are what make the annual NAGA tournament great!

Local AGA's are made up of people in the advertising industry who enjoy golf and are willing to enthusiastically support their local chapter and NAGA. A Chapter is typically comprised of balanced ratios of members from Agencies, Media, Suppliers and Advertisers. Monthly local outings are held at challenging, quality courses in the Chapter's area, many of them private. These events provide great opportunities to expand business contacts, entertain guests, thank hard-working personnel and enjoy the great game of golf at a quality course you may not be able to play regularly. Typically the competition throughout the year determines the four local members who will represent their Chapter at the national tournament. Lots of fun and hometown pride goes into determining the Chapter teams. Members not making the team are encouraged to attend the national tournament and participate in their appropriate division on an individual basis. Spouses of local members are also encouraged to attend the national tournament whether they play golf or not.

If you are qualified to be a member of a local AGA chapter and love the game of golf, seek out the Membership Chairman of the chapter nearest you. We invite you to join an organization which will increase the fun of being an integral part of the advertising community.
